Role Overview

The Internal Auditor / Compliance Officer will be responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, ensuring full regulatory compliance, and proactively identifying operational, financial, and compliance risks. The role combines audit execution, advisory support, and compliance monitoring to safeguard the institutions assets and reputation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal audit and compliance frameworks in line with regulatory requirements and best practices
  • Conduct periodic and ad-hoc audits across operational, financial, and control functions
  • Monitor compliance with CBN regulations, AML/CFT guidelines, KYC policies, and internal procedures
  • Review financial transactions to ensure accuracy, integrity, and proper documentation
  • Investigate control breaches, irregularities, and suspected fraud, escalating findings appropriately
  • Perform spot checks and surprise audits on branches and operational units
  • Prepare clear, timely audit and compliance reports for management and governance committees
  • Advise management on risk mitigation, control improvements, and process enhancements
  • Support business continuity and disaster recovery planning exercises
  • Track audit issues to resolution and ensure corrective actions are implemented
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and uphold the highest ethical standards
  • Participate in cross-functional committees and special assignments as required


Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or HND in Accounting, Finance, Banking, or a related discipline
  • Professional certifications such as ICAN, ACCA, CIA, or CFE are a strong advantage


Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of internal audit, compliance, and risk management frameworks
  • Sound understanding of Nigerian banking and microfinance regulations
  • High analytical, investigative, and problem-solving capability
  • Strong report-writing and stakeholder communication skills
  • High level of integrity, discretion, and ethical judgement
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and audit-related tools
  • Experience with core banking systems (BankOne knowledge is an added advantage)
